Composed of 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, and 3–4% molybdenum, stainless steel 317L pipes are low-carbon versions of SS 317 that offer improved resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack. Because there is less carbide precipitation during welding due to the lower carbon content (maximum 0.03%), welded structures are more resistant to corrosion. In addition to having outstanding ductility and thermal stability, SS 317L has a tensile strength of 515–750 MPa and a yield strength of roughly 205 MPa. These mechanical characteristics enhance its performance in harsh chemical and marine environments and qualify it for high-temperature service.
