The 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, and 3-4% molybdenum content of stainless steel 317 pipes greatly increases their resistance to corrosion, particularly in environments that are acidic and chloride-rich. Manganese, silicon, nitrogen, and low carbon (maximum 0.08%) are also present in the alloy. With good elongation and ductility, SS 317 has a yield strength of roughly 205 MPa and a tensile strength of 515–750 MPa. Even at high temperatures, it retains exceptional mechanical stability and resistance to oxidation, and its higher molybdenum content increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chemical processing and maritime applications.
