316/316L stainless steel consists of about 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum, with 316L having ≤0.03% carbon for better weldability. 316L offers a tensile strength of about 485 MPa and yield strength of around 170 MPa, while 316 provides about 515 MPa and 205 MPa respectively. Elongation is about 35%. Both grades show excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments. Their low thermal expansion, high creep strength, and non-magnetic properties make them excellent for pressure-bearing heat exchanger applications in acidic or saline conditions.
